Corrupted Growth
Mycelium and mushrooms grow through branching patterns that mirror how information spreads online. But when that information corrupts and mutates into misinformation, the growth becomes dangerous.
We photographed mushroom growth every minute across two 14-day time-lapses, generating 18,569 images of pure, natural expansion.
Using analog CRT TVs and video equipment, we corrupted the footage itself—glitching, distorting, and mutating the imagery. The mushrooms represent organic growth. The CRT corruption represents the mutation.
A companion publication documents the research behind the work: how mycelium actually grows, case studies of misinformation spread, and data visualizing the speed of modern media networks. The magazine grounds the abstract visual concept in concrete examples and scientific parallels.
